EPDM is the perfect grip for Dragonstaff and Contact Staff users! Available by the meter or by the roll!
EPDM is second only to Silicone for dragonstaff and contact staff… and even that’s considered a personal preference. EPDM is used by pro dragonstaff and contact staff users due to its exceptional grippyness/ tackiness, it remains a favorite because it works great, ages like a fine wine and is cost-effective.
EPDM is by the meter or by 50-meter roll.
Double staff applications take just under a meter each and contact staff or dragonstaff applications take approximately 2.5 – 3 meters of EPDM to adequately cover the playing area of the staff. It is recommended that you buy in 3-meter chunks to ensure you have enough to grip your equipment. You can also buy EPDM in 50-meter rolls too, each roll is a great value if you are a gear maker or simply want to stock up for life!
EPDM is not adhesive backed. To ensure a long lasting application, you should use double sided sticky tape when wrapping the EPDM on your equipment. To apply, run a length of double sided tape from where your grip will start to where it ends on 3 different axis’s. Do not spiral the double-sided tape as simply running 3 lengths of it straight along the staff will be plenty. Leave the adhesive backing on the double sided tape and remove as you apply the EPDM.
When applying the EPDM, do not overlap it on itself. The EPDM is already quite thick at 1.5mm and will quickly become too bulky if you overlap it. Simply butt it up against itself while wrapping in a spiral. Personally, I like to leave a small gap in-between each wrap to make the chore of gripping a staff easier… however I have also found that having that small ravine in-between each wrap of EPDM provides additional grip by means of GEOMETRIC TACTILITY. Basically, the ridge makes it grab your skin and clothes easier and therefore makes it harder to slip off the user during play.
Finally, EPDM gets better with age… that is as long as you look after it. Make sure to treat it with respect as it is a rubber foam hybrid and rocks, sharp edges, rings, bracelets, and other gouge worthy surfaces will take out chunks of the grip. Over time, the EPDM will pit with use… these micro divots provide additional geometric tactility on a much smaller scale than the ridges of the wrap. You can kick start this pitting by taking to a freshly gripped staff with a piece of medium grit sandpaper and giving it a quick scrub until you start to feel a difference. This is what many of our friends do when they do a fresh wrap.
We hope you enjoy the level up that EPDM will give to your play sessions.
PLAY WELL!
